Ballfields Cafe
Located on the northern edge of Heckscher Ballfields, this 1990s building currently houses the Ballfields Café, a casual eatery.
The building was inspired by and created on the site of the historic Ballplayers’ House, designed by Park co-designer Calvert Vaux as a changing room for ball-players.
The Ballplayers’ House was one of many features and facilities created as part of the Children’s District, an area designed for children that also included the Dairy, the Carousel, and the ball-fields (then called the Play-ground). In the 19th century, the Play-ground and the Ballplayers House were open only to young boys for baseball and cricket. The original building fell into disrepair and was removed in the 1960s.
